A soldier helping with a convoy breakdown was struck and killed on an Oregon highway, police said.

Gonzalo Martinez III, a 29-year-old National Guardsman from Cleveland, Texas, and another soldier exited a Humvee on U.S. Highway 30 on Sunday, Feb. 19, Oregon State Police said in a Feb. 20 news release.

The two had pulled over to help another military vehicle traveling in the opposite direction that was having mechanical issues, police said.

After stepping out of the Humvee, Martinez was struck by a 1997 Chevrolet pickup, according to police. The truck crashed into the parked Humvee.

Both Martinez and the driver of the truck were taken to a hospital, police said. Martinez died, and the truck’s driver was in stable condition.

The crash is being investigated, police said.
